Joseph H Pilates (1883-1967) is the creator of Pilates or Contrology, as he referred to it. It is said very often that Joe was a man way (W-A-Y) ahead of his time. As you get into Pilates, you most likely will also believe this to be true.
The Mat is the Method and is where it all began. As Joe encountered people that had injuries, disabilities, balance issues, and alike, he created each apparatus, therefore enabling anyone/everyone to get the benefits and life changes that Pilates offers.
Upon arriving in New York City, Joe met furniture maker Frank Gratz (The Glass House) and they became friends. After Joe died, Frank was commissioned to make Pilates apparatus, each with Joe’s very custom and precise measurements and history set in.
Pilates is a total body workout where strengthening and stretching are done in a systematic order using the Pilates principals of Control, Centering, Concentration, Precision, Breathing, and Flow. Creating a solid body from the inside out. Connecting your mind and body together to deepen your movements, not only in the studio but in life. People do Pilates to live a better life!
Pilates is a non-impact total body workout probably unlike anything you have ever experienced before. I can assure you that you will feel muscles that you never knew you had! In 55 minutes, you will experience a total body workout. As you begin, the pace is a bit slow as you learn the foundations and apparatus, but after a few sessions (case-by-case), the pace will increase and with a dedication to the method, you will work up to a steady pace and will have a total body workout AND you will sweat AND you will love it!!
BENEFITS OF PILATES
Imagine feeling longer, taller, like you lengthen up to the sky. Imagine feeling your abdominal muscles pulling everything into center throughout your day, like a corset. Imagine increasing your ability to balance. Imagine your muscles forming long and lean throughout your body. Imagine you becoming more aware of your body’s movements and strengths as you flow through life, much differently than before Pilates. Imagine understanding how your body moves and understanding how choices you make are beneficial or not so beneficial to your overall well-being. These are a few of the benefits and feelings that you will experience participating in Pilates, and soon with practice and dedication, the imagination becomes reality.
WHAT IF I HAVE NEVER DONE PILATES BEFORE?
Don’t let this stop you! Pilates is systematical method of exercises designed to improve your physical strength, flexibly, posture, and body imbalances and deficiencies (i.e. from injuries or your profession) by using the Pilates principals (Control, Concentration, Centering, Breathing, Precision, and Flow). Pilates connects your mind and your body so you are not just working from muscle memory.
DO I NEED TO BE IN SHAPE TO DO PILATES?
No! Joseph Pilates believed that Pilates is for everyone and anyone! The Method began on the mat but Joseph realized that not everyone could do all of the mat moves, or feel what they needed to feel, so he invented amazing apparatus that enabled everyone to connect with their powerhouse and understand shapes in space. If you are active for fun or for your profession, Pilates can greatly enhance your ability to move and improve how you move.
“You are only as old as your spine. If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old; it if is completely flexible at 60, you are young.” Joseph Pilates
